HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WJBK) - A baby girl dead in Hamtramck. Investigators say she suffered a deadly blow to the chest.
Christopher Scott Olinger, 23, and the child's mother Amina Markham, 27, have been charged with first degree murder and child abuse first degree. Police say the medical examiner says the baby died from blunt force trauma to the chest.
Hamtramck police responded to a call on Tuesday at a two-family flat on Commerce Street and found a 16-month-old baby girl unresponsive.
Cell phone video was taken by a neighbor of what appears to be the baby's mother talking to police outside the home on Tuesday, shortly after officers arrived.
"She was screaming like crazy and I saw the baby laid out on the grass over here," said Kama Husain. "The streets were filled with cops at that moment."
"They got a little baby on a sidewalk," said another neighbor. "One police officer is trying to give them artificial respiration."
Police say the 16-month-old baby girl was taken to Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Based on her injuries, the death has been ruled as a homicide.
One neighbor is not speaking nicely about the mother, saying there has been a lot of traffic at the house.
"It's a shame a little girl gets beaten like that," said Patrick Williams. "She has all kinds of people coming in all the time, nobody knows who is who."
But a relative who claims she is a third cousin of the mother gives a different point of view.
"She's a good lady, I've never seen her harm her kids or anything," said Lasheena Price. "I've always seen her being there for her kids and taking care of her kids. So this right here is different."
The mother and the other suspect are expected to be arraigned Saturday in 34th District Court in Romulus.
