A Detroit police officer has died after being struck during a traffic stop on the west side at Puritan and Monica.

The suspect has been identified as Steven Patrick Guzina of Lincoln Park. The officer was an eight-year veteran of the force and from the 12th Precinct.

Guzina and a black female companion are currently at large. Guzina is 54 years old. The officer has not been named in order for the family to be notified, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

"The officer that was struck responding to the situation and a vehicle, a Dodge truck, van, a pickup is still at the scene," Craig said. "He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced.

"This is a tragedy. Certainly the men and women of the 12th as well as the entire department is grieving this loss. He was assigned to the 12th precinct the last three years where he was working patrol."

The victim was assisting other officers during an arrest at a traffic stop when he was critically injured at 10:30 p.m. Friday night. The incident happened north of the Lodge freeway, west of Livernois.

That driver ran sparking a massive manhunt with DPD, Michigan State Police and canine officers.
