Jarrett was killed Friday in a hit and run at Puritan and Monica on Detroit's west side. Police say a vehicle driven by Lincoln Park man Steve Guzina ran him down while he was assisting other officers during a traffic stop. Jarrett later died from his injuries at Sinai Grace Hospital.

Guzina was allegedly was smoking crack cocaine at the time. After the crash, police say he fled the scene on foot before being arrested early Saturday morning.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig spoke Monday about the impact Officer Jarrett had in the community.

"He was an outstanding officer," Craig said. "Everyone I've talked to from his family, his wife, great father, to the officers a great mentor, a friend certainly to the community. This is someone who deeply cared not only for the work and the difference he was making - but the community loved him."
