Westland dad home from Baghdad, surprises daughter at school

- Five-year-old Kaylee, a kindergartener at Schweitzer Elementary school, had no idea what was about to happen in class.

The whole school was involved in planning the visit, posting banners and singing songs to welcome home Kaylee's dad for Thanksgiving.

"I had no idea any of this was even happening. I'm just happy to see my kids. I haven't seen them in over nine months," Sgt. Michael Diehl tells us. You can see the moment he surprises his daughter in the video player above.

Sgt Michael Diehl has spent the last 9 months serving our country in Baghdad. He's been in the army for just under 6 years.

"It's emotional; it's excitement; we are truly blessed that we got him home, and not everybody gets those happy homecoming so it's very exciting," says Sgt. Diehl's wife, Ashley.

"We're going to go get some ice cream, then just do whatever the kids want to do today," Sgt. Diehl said.

He is only home until Sunday, just enough time for a Thanksgiving dinner with the family. Then he heads back overseas.

"I just want to say thank you to everybody," Sgt. Diehl says.

"Thank you to the school and everyone who came out, our family; it means a lot," Amy says.
