Front porch package thief caught on video

- After making an online purchase, Sherry Peeples was excited when she received an email notification that her package had arrived last Thursday.

But that joy quickly turned to anger when she looked at her surveillance video.

"I see the postman deliver it at 11:35 a.m. so I'm seeing a package," she said. "But all the sudden it disappears. At 2:07 p.m. I see this guy walk up on my porch and take my package and he had several packages in his hand."

And just like that Peeples' package was gone without a trace.

"I felt violated," she said. "Someone can just walk up on your porch and just take something that you work so hard for."

She hopes by sharing her story and the video someone will recognize the suspect and call police, but she also hopes her sting operation will help catch the suspect also.

"I decided to miss work today and put a package on the porch to see if guy would come up on my porch and I put something in there," said Peeples.

She hopes what's inside a decoy box might make this guy think twice before he strikes again.

"I've got paper, I've got his picture in there to let him know I saw him," she said.

Peeples says, moving forward, she won't have packages delivered to her house when she is not at home. It's also a tip recommended by USPS as a way to protect your mail and packages

"If you're not going to be at home, ship it to somewhere else when you know someone is going to be there," she said.

As more and more people receive packages for the holiday season, USPS offers guidance on how to protect your packages.
