Between 4 and 7 inches of snow expected to fall this weekend in Metro Detroit

Well, here we go! The first big snow storm of the season is knocking on our back door and it's going to be a big one.

On Thursday, we broke down the fact that this weekend was looking snowy and discussed how it would come in two “chunks”: Saturday night through Sunday morning and then more Sunday afternoon through Monday.

Early on Friday, morning models have come to enough of an agreement that it’s time to start talking heavy details.

TIMING

Snow will likely start falling around 10PM on Saturday night and will be nearly continuous through Monday morning around 10AM.

TOTALS

For most of the area, we're looking at between 4 and 7 inches - but it could be deeper in some spots.

We're still looking at a one-two punch of snow. The first one will 'wrap' up around 3pm Sunday when we have between 2 and 4 inches on the ground. At that point, we're only half done.

The second punch comes in and we'll tack on another 2 to 3 inches, giving us a grand total of 4 to 7 inches by Monday afternoon.

It’s the first big snowfall of the year folks!

These prolonged snow events are usually the ones that can really pile up the snow… and we’ve seen a few over the last few years.

When the snow ends, we don't really get much of a reprieve from the temperatures. Next Wednesday, a polar blast comes through, dropping lows into the single digits and keeping highs in the teens and 20s. This isn't average for this time of year but it does happen from time to time in December.

WHITE CHRISTMAS?

Speaking of end of December, what are the chances of a White Christmas?  Stay tuned for a breakdown of our chances coming early next week.

We will continue to watch this snow storm and update totals over the next 48 hours on Facebook and online at www.fox2detroit.com.
