Full closings list: More than 500 closed on Monday

The first major snow storm of the 2016-2017 winter could dump ten inches of snow in some areas. This is no joke - as Derek Kevra pointed out earlier today - and many schools will be closed on Monday as cities try to dig out.

On average, you should expect to see about six to nine inches of snow - but there are some places who will pick up ten inches of snow.

The key thing to remember is that this is going to be ALL DAY snow on Sunday.  By the time we wake up there will only be 1-2" on the ground.  By lunch time it will be closer to 2-4" and by dinner it will be between 5-7".  But the snow won't end until early Monday... which is why the totals could be closer to 8" before all is said and done.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

The snow will likely have an impact on the Monday morning commute. As of 5:30 pm Sunday, 12 schools had already canceled classes for the day with Novi being the largest district. Walled Lake schools had also canceled classes for the day as well as other academies throughout the area.

If you do have to get out and drive either Sunday night or Monday before the snow is cleared, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time and assume that things will be slow going.

CLEAR THE SNOW

If you haven't gotten out and cleared your driveway or sidewalk yet and are planning to do it all Monday morning - you may want to rethink it. With this much snow, it could be problematic to shovel ten inches off of your driveway.

Instead, get out Sunday evening and shovel a layer off. Ignore the snow that's still falling and then tomorrow morning you'll be less exhausted when it's time to take the rest of the snow off. Plus - you may get to work close to on time!

There are six things you can do to make sure you shovel smart - and are safe. CLICK HERE to read our list of Six Things To Do Before You Shovel
