Retired Detroit cop one of two men who died while clearing snow in Metro Detroit

- Authorities are investigating after two men were reported dead after they were snowblowing on Sunday, one of them was a retired Detroit Police officer.

A 55-year-old man in Rochester Hills was found unconscious in his bedroom after cleaning up the show. Canton Police also say a 71-year-old man died Sunday after snowblowing.

FOX 2 has learned the Canton man was retired police officer Michael Moersch.

"A shock," said Diane Anderson, his sister. "He just had a clean bill of health two weeks ago it's unbelievable. It just happened so quick."

Around 5:30 pm, the family says Michael went out to use his snowblower to remove the snow that had been falling all day Sunday and unfortunately never made it back inside the family home

"I got a phone call from my brother he found my father laying in the garage after snow blowing," said Kim Pillow. "My father is 70 years old,  very stubborn and would not let anyone help him."

A devoted father, brother and husband, family members say Michael spent 20 years as a Detroit Police officer and then opened a  heating and cooling business with his brother Tom, that they both retired from.

Loved ones say Michael was now spending his days helping to take care of his wife of 50 years who is suffering from dementia.
Wayne County Medical Examiner says Moersch's death was due to natural causes, cardiovascular disease/obesity.

As the family tries to cope they hope by sharing their story no one else has to experience their pain

"If you've got older parents please do their snow for them," Pillow said. "Don't let them go out and do that not a good thing to do."

Further details about the man's death in Rochester Hills aren't known at this time.
