Another 4 to 6 inches of snow to drop on Detroit on Friday

Southeast Michigan has barely recovered from Monday's snow storm or the extremely cold temperatures of the week, but - ready or not, more snow is coming.

DANGEROUSLY COLD

For Thursday and Friday, we're still focusing on the dangerously cold temperatures. The polar plunge has dropped us well below freezing and wind chills below zero.

Arctic temperatures with highs in the teens and overnight lows in the single digits - not to mention those sub-zero wind chills - are here until Friday night. On Saturday, we finally get a break from the dangerously cold air.

Don't misread anything - it won't feel like Florida - but it will be warmer. Those temperatures will be critical in our next snow system that's arriving Friday evening.

WARMER (KINDA) BUT MORE SNOW

The snow will begin around dinner time (5-7 pm) on Friday with the snow intensity picking during the overnight hours. By the time you wake up Saturday morning, you should be ready to clear off a fresh 4-6 inches of snow.

Then a warm front moves in and change the snow over to a rain/snow mix. That will happen around 6 am on Saturday. The mixed precipitation will cut into our snow totals but will also make for a very sloppy slushy day on Saturday.

Where the warm front comes in will be critical because it will determine the rain/snow line; if the line is further north, that means southeast Michigan will be above freezing. That means more rain. If the rain/snow line is further south this means we'll stay in the cold pocket of air and our temperatures will stay below freezing and we will have high snow total amounts.

White Christmas likely for Detroit

BACK TO THE COLD

By the time Saturday night hits, we'll be on the backside of the system - which brings us another arctic blast of air through the area. That will linger through the first half of next week.

Remember - we live in Michigan. It gets cold and it snows so bundle up and stay inside if you can.
