Detroit business owner says city is playing "Scrooge"

It's Christmastime, and decorations are all over Bazzi Tire store on Schaefer and Tireman on Detroit's west side.  Apparently a city inspector is going to be a Grinch. He doesn't like the Christmas decorations and the American flags.

“It’s ridiculous,” said Jay Bazzi, store owner.

The city inspector showed up Wednesday afternoon and said essentially -get rid of the flags.

“We’re in the holiday spirit. He comes down here and tells us to take them off, and I'll be back in 10 minutes to check,” said Bazzi.

We wanted to "check" on the inspector to find out why he doesn't like Christmas.  Customers were shocked.

“I was shocked. We are in America. This is the United States of America. We live for this stuff,  to celebrate whatever holiday we want , whatever things we want to put up, right?” said a concerned customer.

Well maybe not.  Jay tells us the inspector has written him tickets before. One was for painting a logo on his building.

“I don’t know why. He doesn’t say anything much. He said ‘did you call me, did you ask me if you can do this?’  I told him ‘no’" said Bazzi.

Jay had the flags in holders on his fence. The business next door has flags, and apparently the inspector is not saying anything about those.

“I don't know what the big deal is about putting an American flag out there.  I don't know what he's going to say if I put my own flag up. What's next?" said Osman Elfassih, Owner of Builders Pro Hardware next door.

The city tells us it did receive a complaint.   However, the city now says that the flags are generally not a problem, but they must be secured properly and they cannot obstruct pedestrian or vehicle traffic.

“America is great,” said Bazzi. “But if I have to go through all this – wow, just wow."
