INKSTER, Mich. (WJBK) - Two people have been arrested and police are investigating after a 3-year-old Inkster boy died in the emergency room.
At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the father drove his critically injured son to the hospital ER. Doctors and nurses fearing the boy may have been mistreated called police.
"The injuries that we found and the type of injuries that we’ve seen preliminary were some injuries to the head, some injuries to the foot, foot area and there were possibly some internal injuries as well," said Inkster Police Chief William Riley.
The father and his girlfriend told police the boy fell down a flight of stairs, but their stories didn't match up, according to police.
The boy died in the ER and police arrested the 41-year-old father and his 21-year-old girlfriend.
Neighbors we spoke with told us the family and the boy always appeared cheerful and peaceful.
"He always smiled -- every day. He's a good kid," said Kerry Ballard.
The boy was constantly cruising in his toy four wheeler on the walkway leading to his family's second story apartment.
"He comes down about every day. He rides his truck mostly … and he comes down to my house, and my windows are cracked a little bit. He’ll stick his head in and say, ‘Hey, how you doin'?’ -- and ask do I have another Popsicle. You know like I give him Popsicles and suckers and stuff," said neighbor Aaron Martin Parker.
Neighbors say they never saw the boy harmed or hurt-- and now they wonder if the boy could have accidentally driven down the steps leading to his apartment.
"It's possible that he could have fallen down the steps. You know cause there's no brakes ... It's possible it could have been an accident (because) they were beautiful parents to that boy," Ballard said.
No siblings, the boy lived in an apartment with his dad and dad had custody of his son.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner is expected to complete the autopsy Friday. Meanwhile, his dad and dad's girlfriend are being held in the Inkster lockup pending possible charges.
