MELVINDALE - A popular staple in a community for years, Melvindale has lost one of its popular pastry shops. Yum-Yum Donuts has been destroyed by a massive fire.
We spoke with the owner of the donut shop by phone and he said one his employees closed down the store around 5:15 as usual, then about two hours later he got a call from the Melvindale police. His business was on fire. By the time he arrived, it was too late and the entire building was in flames.
Firefighters smashed out the store front windows of Yum-Yum Donuts in Melvindale as huge plumes of smoke rolled out of the building.
"The whole neighborhood was smoky until two or three at night," says neighbor Maher Alsoofi.
"Out of nowhere I smelled smoke and oil. So I went to my garage originally thinking my garage was on fire and then you could see it was engulfed from the inside out," says Jacqueline Kennedy, a neighbor.
A quaint little donut and bagel shop was burning down at the corner of Reed and Oakwood, a place that has been a staple in the community for as long as Jacqueline Kennedy can remember.
"It’s a nice place where everyone just comes has coffee, we sit, we talk to everyone. Everyone knows everyone over here,” says Kennedy.
In the daylight, the broken out windows are boarded up and shattered glass litters the outdoor dining set. A peek inside of the remaining windows shows soaked insulation from the ceiling.
The marquee out front signaling a sign of better days to come, summer is over and the customers will surely be coming back.
The question is after this fire will they ever get a chance to come back.
"We never know what is going to happen now. Are they going to demolish it or rebuild, it is a huge loss for the community,” says Kennedy.
Hours were spent fighting this fire according to the owner, but just like a lot of people in the community they are still waiting for fire investigators to determine how this fire started.
Owner Jeff Greenwald of Yum-Yum Donuts has released a statement after the fire;
“To all of our friends and faithful customers we have sad news. The donut shop is closed due to a building fire that happened tonight. It is destroyed and we don’t know what’s going to happen. We will keep everyone on our page updated as we get info. For now there is an investigation and we can’t even go in the building for two weeks. We miss you all and please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this difficult time.”
