ROYAL OAK - A 50-year-old woman is shot and killed at her Royal Oak home and her boyfriend is in custody as their only suspect.
Officers found Theresa Diamos with a gunshot wound after calls to police poured in from neighbors just before 3 a.m.
The suspect, a 48-year-old felon, moved in with Diamos about four years ago into her north Altedena house, according to neighbors.
This marked the first homicide in Royal Oak this year.
Neighbors say they awoke to the sound of fighting, screaming and gunfire.
"I opened the door and heard screaming," said Sarmad Awdish. "My friend said that was a gunshot. Call 911."
"The initial information was there was a suspect in the house," said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue. "We went in and got her, and attempted to treat her at the scene. Then the Royal Oak Fire Department transported her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead."
Police took the neighbor into custody but say he is not cooperating with their questioning.
Neighbors told FOX 2 they warned Theresa about her boyfriend.
"All kinds of people tried to tell her, no, don't take this fellow in your home," said Charlene Ludwig. "She was so soft-hearted that she took this guy in, even though he had just got out of prison."
Investigators from Royal Oak Police and the Oakland County Sheriff's Department spent most of the day at the crime scene collecting evidence.
For now the suspect is in jail awaiting felonious weapon charges. A homicide charge could follow.
"I would say to him, I hope you rot in jail," Ludwig said. "I do, truly. She was just a gorgeous young lady."
