2 EMS workers stabbed on the job in Detroit

- Authorities are looking for a suspect after two EMS workers were attacked on the job.

Tuesday around 12:30 a.m., the workers were called to the 3400 block of Third Street to help a woman with an injured ankle. That's when Eric Jones, the interim Detroit Fire Commissioner, says a man in the area got angry and agitated with how the response and injury assessment was going, and slashed the workers in the face and body with a sharp object.

Authorities believe the suspect knew the woman with the injured ankle.

Though severely injured, the EMS workers were able to drive themselves to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

"I'm determined to get them the training and the equipment that they need. It was a horrific scene. The EMS rig, the scene inside of the rig, is horrific. Their injuries are horrific. They're upset. They're concerned about the safety of how they do their job and their colleagues, and I fully intend to get them the training and equipment they need to protect themselves," Jones said at a news conference earlier Tuesday morning.

The suspect got away. A description hasn't been released yet.

The EMS workers did not sustain life-threatening injuries, but they both will need surgery.
