HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WJBK)
An elementary school in Harper Woods was on lockdown Thursday morning as a police situation unfolded nearby.
Police were pursuing a suspect along I-94, and the suspect got out of his vehicle and ran at I-94 and 8 Mile Road, which is just a few blocks away from Poupard Elementary.
The lockdown was lifted just after noon when police called off the search. They could not locate the suspect and believe he left the area.
**UPDATE at 2:45 p.m., Nov. 5
The suspect has been found and is in custody.
Below find a statement from Harper Woods Director of Public Safety Jim Burke:
I am happy to report the suspect that had fled earlier from the Michigan State Police in our community is in custody. A resident of St. Clair Shores received our NIXLE broadcast containing the description of the wanted male. About 20 minutes after he received the information, he observed the suspect walking N/B on Beaconsfield near Oak Street.
The resident observed the suspect enter a rear yard and apparently steal a bicycle. The suspect then continued N/B on the bicycle while the resident contacted HWDPS. Our dispatcher immediately contacted MSP and the suspect was placed under arrest minutes later.
I would like to thank the caller for his assistance and again remind the community that the best defense against crime is to keep an eye on your neighborhood and report anything that is out of the ordinary.
If you have neighbors, family, or friends who are not subscribers to NIXLE, this may be a good opportunity to get them to do so.
Information in the hands of the community greatly expands the ability of our officers to protect our residents.
