5 children hospitalized after apartment fire

Five children are hospitalized after a late-night house fire Wednesday on Detroit's west side.

The fire broke out in an apartment in the 1600 block of Glendale Street, which is near the Lodge and the Davison. Firefighters got to the apartment around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and saw heavy fire and smoke in the building.

Two adults jumped from the second floor and needed treatment, and children were in the front yard. Authorities beefed up response and dozens of firefighters and EMS technicians were on scene at the height of the fire.

All children transported to the hospital were under 7 years old.

One firefighter also received second-degree burns to the face and neck, and has been treated and released.

Authorities haven't determined the cause of the fire yet but believe it's electrical in nature, and appears to have started in the basement.
