$50,000 stolen from ATM in Rochester Hills heist

A big score for two clever thieves targeting an ATM in Rochester Hills.

Police say the duo got away with $50-thousand dollars cash from this machine. Police are still working to track them down.

Early Sunday at about 1:30 a.m., police say two suspects broke into an ATM at the PNC Bank in Rochester Hills.  Oakland County Sheriffs are working with the FBI to figure out how this happened, because it was a little different than a normal smash and grab.

"Suffice it to say, they used brute force against the device on the inside," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. "And were able to access where the sleeves of money were contained."

And police would not say exactly how much money was taken, it borders on $50,000. The suspects had masks and they were covered up pretty good. One man may have been wearing a black leather coat with a New York Yankees hat, the other had a black hoodie.

FOX 2: "Do you suspect if there are other banks involved?"

"We want to make sure other banks are aware of how this played out," Bouchard said. "And we are trying to ascertain if they did hit other banks maybe not in this area, maybe not in the state, because of the way this was done. It's rather unique."

The sheriff told me he has not given the specifics as to this crime, because he wants to identify the suspects and doesn't want copycats to go out and do it.

The sheriffs are reviewing video surveillance of the scene, but they do want your help.

There is a reward offered for anyone with information about the suspects. Call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at (248) 858-4951.
