Families grieve, funerals set for fiery crash victims

- A fiery crash killed four young men in Detroit and a fifth person still hospitalized in critical condition.

“It's tragic, I’m going to miss him,” said Antoine Henley, Antoine’s father.

Antoine Henley's 16-year-old son of the same name was one of four young men killed Saturday night in a fiery crash just a short distance from Osborne High School at Seven Mile and Stotter.

Henley played basketball along with his friend, high school senior O'zavien Riggs, known as TJ, and their buddy Cortez Chism, who was a senior and captain of the football team.

“Cortez shined; any room he walked in everybody loved him,” said Cherrita Chism-Thomas, Cortez’s mother. “I wasn't just his mother, his whole neighborhood was his mother, his teachers, and he just shined wherever he went.”

“He was a star, he was loved by many. I loved him and he loved me and that's all I know,” said Lanita Riggs, TJ’s mother.

Twenty-four-year-old Walter Johnson was also killed in the crash. A 16-year-old friend survived and is hospitalized.

Police say it's not yet clear who was driving, but that speed was a factor when they crashed into the base of a sign post. Their Jeep Cherokee caught fire. Police are trying to determine if they were racing or just speeding down the street.

“God will get you through it. They loved each other and unfortunately they died together, a senseless death,” said Chism-Thomas.

They died together and will be memorialized together at the Liberty City Church, just a couple of blocks from Osborne High School.

The funeral is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Liberty City Church of Christ on 12411 East Seven Mile Rd. in Detroit, the church is asking for donations of money and food for Saturday.

A second service for Riggs is also being held on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church on Van Dyke Avenue in Detroit at 11 a.m.

There will be no visitation for Cortez. However, there is a GoFundMe set up. Click here to donate.
