More lighting goes up at Detroit's Avenue of Fashion

- The Avenue of Fashion, a busy shopping district in northwest Detroit, is getting some much needed outdoor lighting just in time for the holidays.

"Lights mean money, and lights mean safety for women and children. I mean, literally, it was pitch black," says Granston Bullard, who owns a business on The Avenue. "When Warren [Evans] came by and saw the conditions under which we were trying to do business, he ... was quite concerned."

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans walked the stretch of retail and knew something had to change. There had been a number of breakins on the once-famed avenue, so the city put new LED street lights in. In just two months, business at some stores has tripled because of it. And now, newer lights will hit the storefronts.

"We've seen a lot more traffic, as far as just the pedestrian traffic, and the flow of traffic with the cars has increased, almost tripled," Bullard says. "People just coming down to see what's going on in the avenues, all the new businesses. They couldn't see 'em!"

Wednesday kicked off the lighting of 120 new lights in six blocks.

The Avenue of Fashion is located on Livenois Avenue between Seven and Eight Mile roads. For more information, visit www.avenueoffashion.com
