ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - A section of Twelve Mile Road in Roseville was closed for several hours Thursday morning after a deadly accident.
Mary and Paul Noll have lived in their house for the past 52 years. They've seen a handful of accidents outside their home but nothing like the one that happened Thursday morning just a feet away from their front door.
"I called 911 and I think I was crying. I told them please bring somebody right away because it looked horrible," Mary says.
Police say 32-year-old Shane Caughey died when he lost control of his 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo just after 1 a.m. Thursday. The car jumped a curve and collided with a tree. The westbound lanes of 12 Mile near Congress were shut down for at least five hours while police investigated.
"The driver's side was against the tree. I mean, it was really bent in bad," Paul says. "Never been that bad on 12 Mile. Never," says Paul.
Police believe the driver had been drinking and that he was speeding, going at least 70 mph when he hit the tree. He was two blocks away from home.
The Nolls say they planted that tree as a lasting symbol of love, but that it's now forever a marker for a young life lost.
"I just feel bad for the people that have to go through the holidays without this person," Mary says.
