DETROIT (WJBK) - The National Action Network spoke out Christmas Eve after a man was fatally shot by a Dearborn police officer in Detroit on Wednesday.
Dearborn Police say an officer spotted 36-year-old Kevin Matthews, who was known to be wanted on a probation violation warrant. Dearborn police say Matthews also escaped from officers earlier in the day after committing a larceny in Dearborn.
Dearborn police say the two got in a struggle over the officer's gun and that's when the officer fired a shot, which killed Matthews.
You can watch a replay of the National Action Network's press conference here. The family said during the conference that Matthews had paranoid schizophrenia and a physical deformity in his hand that did not allow him to extend his hand open all the way. His family also said he was not a violent person.
Police are hoping the dash camera from the squad car will offer more information.
