Ice storms expected Monday afternoon

By: Meteorologist Derek Kevra

A potentially dangerous weather situation is setting up for Monday as a system approaches us from the south.  The system will bring a little of everything: freezing rain, snow and regular rain... each of which offers its own problems.

Starting around noon on Monday we will see the threat for snow and sleet, but that will quickly turn into freezing rain.  With temperatures below freezing, the rain will hit the ground and quickly freeze, allowing a layer of ice on the roads, trees and power lines.  The threat continues into the evening (about 7PM) before most of us in SE MI will happily warm above freezing and will see just rain instead.  Spots farther north will continue to see freezing rain through the nighttime hours.

Along with the freezing rain and ice, winds will be gusty on Monday, blowing at times to between 30-40 mph.  This may create some power outage situations.

Ice totals near the thumb are expected to be near 1/4" while in SE MI we will be closer to 0.1".
