65-year-old woman shot during attempted carjacking

A 65-year-old  woman shot during an attempted carjacking on Detroit's west side.

The victim is now in the hospital and the shooter is on the run.

The shooting happened at the corner of Stout and McNichols outside the 65-year-old woman's home. Witnesses say the victim was getting inside her car when the men ran up to her, tried stealing her purse and her vehicle. After being startled, she resisted and that was when one of the suspects fired his gun."

"They shot so many times, like at least seven times," said one neighbor who tried to help her. "(She was shot) in her side. Her right side."

The neighbor who understandably does not want the suspects police are looking for to see her face,  said she ran over to help the 65 year-old moments after she had been shot and saw the criminals driving away.

The crime happened late Wednesday morning in broad daylight.

"She's in the hospital right now because of some stupidity of the crime of Detroit," the neighbor said. "And something needs to be done about it."

Neighbors say the woman has lived in the area for decades, always willing the help the next person, and now this happened.

"You're talking about an elderly woman, retired, living the rest of her life and this is something that happens to her," the neighbor said.  "It's not good."

Four suspects are still on the loose. Detroit police spent the late morning and part of the afternoon investigating the scene drove off in two cars, a black and a white Chrysler Sebring - either 2005 or 2006 models.  At this time, investigators don't have a good description on any of them, and tips are needed.

If you have any information about the incident or suspects, call Detroit police at (313) 596-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
