Good Samaritan jumps into purse snatcher's car, retrieving victim's bag

- A fearless woman takes on a thief in Harper Woods - the man was in the midst of stealing a purse and it wasn't even hers.

Police say this should serve as a reminder to be vigilant, alert and aware of your surroundings.

The purse snatching caper was caught on camera Monday morning at Kroger on Eight Mile and Harper in Harper Woods.

A man drove into the parking lot, spots an unsuspecting woman hauling her groceries to her car and pounced.

"She was more or less shocked by what was happening," said Lt. Jason Hammerle from Harper Woods Department of Public Safety. "The male pulled up behind her as she was getting into her car and took her purse right off of her."

But on camera you can see what happens after the man goes after the victim. Another woman intervenes, jumps into his car and recovers the purse.

That suspect is described as a white man with a scruffy beard in his late 20s or early 30s.

He was driving an older green Pontiac Bonneville. Police only have a  partial plate it begins with  CC.

It is something many would think twice about doing.

"A tremendous amount of courage on that person's part," Hammerle said. "You don't see that every day. Most people turn a blind eye or call the police instead."

So what would you do if you were in her shoes?

At the scene, the Good Samaritan left soon after coming to the victim's rescue. The suspect got away before police arrived and they believe wasn't his first rodeo.

"We actually had a similar incident, the same suspect, the same description, the same vehicle description just prior to Thanksgiving," Hammerle said. "So this guy's been around and he's done that a couple of times and actually hit our Kroger twice."
