7 police officers across metro area charged in fraudulent auto inspections

Seven police officers in the metro area have been charged with felonies related to fraudulent auto inspections.

Law enforcement members from the Detroit Police Department; Detroit Public Schools Safety Department; Bangor Police Department; Redford Police Department; Northfield Township Police Department; Van Buren Township Police Department; and the Riverview Police Department are facing the charges. Some are current officers and others are former. You can see a full list of those who have been charged below.

Authorities allege these officers lied about doing a specific vehicle inspection intended to detect stolen vehicles and parts. The inspection involves salvaged vehicles.

Vehicles become salvaged when they become distressed, for example, after being totaled by an insurance company. Then, the car can't be plated or used on public roads again until until it's been recertified by a trained police officer. All those facing charges were properly trained to recertify cars.

Before recertifying the vehicles, officers needed to do a check with the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN). This check can detect if the car has been stolen, or if it has been rebuilt with stolen parts.

Authorities allege these officers signed off on the LEIN check -- but never actually ran the car through the inspection.

All seven are facing multiple charges of Uttering and Publishing, which is a 14-year felony. They were charged following an investigation by the FBI Detroit-Area Public Corruption Task Force and the Michigan State Police.
