7-year-old killed, 8-year-old wounded in Steel Street shooting

DETROIT - A 7-year-old girl is killed and an 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after both were shot Sunday night.

Two people of interest are in custody for the Steel Street shooting in which the Detroit house was "sprayed" with bullets, according to police.

Chanel Berry died in the shooting, while Ellen Garjo was wounded, while playing with Christmas presents.

"My baby died in my arms," said Kiana Johnson, mother of Chanel, her youngest child. "My baby was down, I (went) to pick my baby up in my arms and my baby died in my arms.

Police say the shooting happened after 23-year-old Sharonda Benson began arguing with Ellen's mother. Apparently both have children with the same man.  And after leaving, Benson threatened to return.

"It was because of her," Johnson said. "That my baby lost her life. She knew there were kids in here."

Chanel and Ellen were both shot multiple times.  Ellen lies critical in the hospital on Monday. Police say Benson turned herself in.

Sources say her 22-year-old relative,  found in a taxi on Lamphere near Joy, was also arrested.

"Senseless, tragic, over what?" Police Chief James Craig said. "People get to argue, but they don't get to use this kind of response to resolve whatever their differences are."

Chanel was an honor roll student and captain of her cheer team.

"It's senseless, jealous girlfriend," said Shae Card, a family relative. "Just senseless."

Chanel's mother is now left holding photos instead of her baby.

"I still got my baby's blood on my hands," Johnson said. "I'm not washing it off until my baby gets justice. Justice for Chanel."

The two suspects have not been charged as the Wayne County Medical Examiner expects to conclude Chanel's autopsy Tuesday.
