More than 50 Detroit schools closed Monday

- Dozens of Detroit Public Schools were forced to shut down Monday due to a high number of teacher sick calls.

This is all part of an organized effort and was a planned sick-out. A group of frustrated teachers called Detroit Strikes to Win organized the effort during a special rally Sunday. They gathered for more than an hour to talk about the sick-outs, as well as a possibility of a district-wide strike.

DPS issued an alert to parents late Sunday night that they anticipated school closings. At time of publishing, fifty-six schools are currently closed. You can find a full list below, or by clicking here

Teachers are upset over a number of things, among them including classroom overcrowding, healthcare cuts and no pay raises in recent years.

A handful of schools have also been closed in the past few weeks due to teacher sick-outs.

Later Monday morning, members of the Detroit Teachers Union plan to meet and speak with the media about some of the issues they are up against. Teachers say they are also planning to hold a rally at 12:30 p.m.
