DETROIT (WJBK) - A suspect who fought with a Detroit Police officer and ran off is back in handcuffs after he fought with an officer and even got away before being tracked down.
Skyfox was over the scene on Detroit's southwest side on Thursday. It started with a traffic stop and ended with the man being taken into custody.
"There's no routine traffic stop because you're going into something that is unknown," Sgt. Daniel Buglo said.
Police say the man was driving a stolen vehicle, and once he was stopped, a fight began.
"During the struggle, the man tried going for the officer's weapon," Buglo said. "During the handcuffing procedure, they were able to get one handcuff on him before he tried to break and run."
"I was sitting in the car watching what was going on, (when they) pulled up. They started searching the guy, they started wrestling, and he wanted to get away. He did not want to go to jail," a neighbor said.
Detroit Police said they spotted the man in a silver Pontiac. During the struggle, the man ran out of his shoes and his coat. Then he ran down the street but he didn't get far. Police said they found him inside a small apartment building right down the street at the corner of Lawndale and Homer.
"The officers went inside the apartment and found the guy hiding behind a refrigerator and was taken into custody without incident," Buglo said.
Police say they found other stolen items inside the car that may be connected to another crime. This guy will likely face more charges investigators say for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
