80-year-old Eastpointe man carjacked

An 80-year-old man had his car stolen Wednesday after offering a ride to a stranger.

Eastpointe, Mich., resident James Lee said a man asked for a ride outside a Clark gas station on Detroit's east side.

He said the man asked if Lee wanted to make a few dollars by giving him a ride. Lee, who knows the neighborhood well, said the man seemed friendly and let him into his red 1993 Mercedes Benz.

"You can go anywhere on the east side ... and they know me," Lee said.

As they drove down Chalmers Avenue near east Warren, Lee said the man was friendly and chatty the whole way. After pulling over to drop the young man off, Lee said the man got out and opened Lee's door.

Lee said the man snatched him out of the far and he fell. The suspect then began hitting him on the chest and shoulder.  Lee called police, who arrived right away. He described his attacker as a black man with a lighter complexion in his mid-20s with a beard. Police are still searching for the suspect and Lee's car.

"I just feel like it's a lesson," Lee said.
