A man accused of several sexual assaults made an appearance in front of a Wayne County judge Monday. Darian Winfield was in court accused of a stabbing attack of a Grosse Pointe woman last month.
A detective read the written confession of Winfield, 19, sitting quietly Monday during his preliminary exam.
"'Yes, I Darian Winfield assaulted a woman with a silver butter knife with a serrated edge,'" read Michael Narduzzi. "'I apologize for my actions and are going to take full responsibility.'"
Testifying against Winfield, was a woman who says after having a fight with her husband and walking along Cadieux, Winfield followed her and then stole her cell phone.
"He makes two phone calls on my cell phone," she said. "And then he turns around, I never heard him speak with anyone on the phone, he turns around, walks over to me and hands it back."
She said she thought her attacker was gone as she was still texting her husband. The woman says Winfield then jumped out at her, pulling her on to the ground.
"'Why are you doing this to me,' was the only words I said to him," she testified. "He did not answer me back. He pulled me to the ground, he held me by my arm and I thought he was hitting me."
The woman says the attack only lasted a minute but she realized that she was actually being stabbed -
three times in the chest with slashes across her wrist and face.
"I was cut up and gashed, bleeding and completely soaked in blood," she said.
The woman said she was drunk and couldn't remember a lot of details.
Attorney: "You could not positively identify this man as your assailant, could you."
"Not until a second time I looked at him," she said.
Police capturing Winfield on surveillance video from an area business at the same time this woman insist Winfield attacked her, the suspect claims, over a look as he said in the confession.
"'I gave the woman her phone back she gave me a kind of hatred, crazy look that I didn't like,'" read Narduzzi.
Winfield is also charged with breaking into a Detroit home and attempting to sexually assault a woman last December, stabbing her in the chest. That woman fought him off with a Taser testified against him last week.
Detroit police say he could also be responsible for sexually assaulting and beating a 17-year-old Detroit girl to death.
As the last case remains under investigation, the judge on Monday determined that Winfield will stand trial on that assault with intent to murder charge.
He is being held on a $1 million bond.
