(WJBK) - You wouldn't know it by looking at him, but 9-year-old Devin Cantley has had a tough couple of years.
"It was scary when I first found out, when I had cancer," he said.
On Nov. 15, 2016, Devin fell off the monkey bars at school and broke his arm. It was there that an X-ray revealed a tumor - it was osteosarcoma.
"We caught Devin's pretty early," said Rosanna Pettaway, his mother. "He went through his treatments, we spent every holiday, every birthday in the hospital that year."
Devin was sick from the treatment for over a year and stayed in the hospital throughout that time. The treatments were working and finally Devin and his family got the news they were waiting for - he was cancer free.
"I kind of cried inside," he said. "Like 'Yes I'm free.'"
"We went and we did our Disney trip in June and we went and we had fun," his mom said. "In May we had done our echocardiogram."
It was that echocardiogram that appeared abnormal.
"They wanted him to give it another three months and do another echocardiogram. And in September it was a lot worse."
Devin's lower left heart ventricle is deteriorating and potentially will need a heart transplant.
"This is a whole new set of problems," his mom said.
And as you can imagine on top of Devin's health issues, the family is going through a lot as well.
"It's been hard, I haven't worked," said Rosanna. "Luckily I had a landlord that was nice because I didn't pay rent for a year and she let us live here.
"We thought we were doing good and then this heart stuff happened. My car breaks down a couple weeks ago - it is just sitting out there."
FOX 2: "Everything just feels like it is piling up?"
"A little bit, yes." she said.
Through it all, this family has been strong.
FOX 2: "How have you been able to keep that smile on your face? You smile a lot."
"My family and everyone - the things they do for me," he said.
