Woman hit and killed on 8 Mile Tuesday morning

A woman who was walking on 8 Mile early Tuesday morning was killed. Now police and her family are hoping you noticed the person who hit and ran.

- Police are still searching for the driver who ran over a woman and left her to die in the middle of 8 Mile early Tuesday morning.

The gruesome scene unfolded just before 3 a.m. Tuesday. Lawshawn Dawson was crossing 8 Mile between Evergreen and Southfield when the 44-year-old was hit by a car.

The driver who hit her just kept going as Dawson laid in the road and died. Her 24-year-old daughter, Lawanda,  was stunned that someone could do that to her mom.

"That's my mom somebody just hit her and left her," Lawanda said. "She's gone. I'm never gonna get her back, I'm never gonna have another mom."

Dawson had been at her cousin's home near 7 Mile and Evergreen on Monday. She left around 5 p.m. to head to the store but never came back. The woman had a mental condition but took her medication regularly and has never wandered off before. By 3 a.m., she was dead.

Dawson recently broke her ankle and her family is still trying to figure out why she was on 8 Mile and why a driver would hit her and just leave.

Southfield Police spent the morning on 8 Mile to collect evidence but say they have little to go on and Deputy Chief Nick Loussia is asking anyone who knows anything to say something.

"We're hoping that somebody knows something, that somebody saw something, that somebody maybe sees a vehicle abandoned somehwere that has front end damage," Loussia said. "We're reaching out to business owners or homewoners that have cameras at their businesses or residence to review the video. If there's anything on that video that would be of use to us in the ivnestigation, we ask that they give us a call."

Lawshawn's sister, Willowdell Jackson, is begging the person responsible to come forward.

"We just want to know who did this so we can have peace. Please, whoever did this, turn yourself in, for us," Jackson said.

Lawanda has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral expenses. Click here to donate
