Abandoned dog left on discarded mattress happy at foster home

The abandoned dog that spent days waiting on a discarded mattress for his former owner to return is happy and recovering in his new foster home.

A picture of Boo the dog asleep on a mattress in Detroit alongside other belongings left on the curb quickly stole the hearts of hundreds.

When Dustin Oliver, the founder of Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue, heard about Boo, he quickly took action.

Oliver made repeated trips to visit Boo, earning his trust with snacks and showing the dog he was there to help.

Boo had refused to leave his former owners' belongings.

By day two, Oliver was able to put a leash on him, and wrapped him in a blanket.

He took Boo right to the vet, where he learned the pup has stage two heartworm.

Boo won't be able to be adopted for a while, but photos posted by the Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue show he's happy and safe at his foster home.

If you'd like to help Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue, they are holding a fundraiser from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Firebird Tavern in Greektown.
