Allen Park man with disabled car killed after being struck on I-75

A man with car trouble pulls over on I-75 then is hit by a tractor trailer and killed Thursday morning.

Troy police say 43-year-old Patrick Arthurs' 2004 Cadillac broke down on I-75 just south of the Crooks Road overpass. The hood was up and he was standing by his car.

"It was very low light conditions," said Sgt. Meghan Lehman, Troy police. "The driver of the cement hauler wasn't sure what he hit, it was clear he hit something. He called us shortly after striking the pedestrian.

The Allen Park man was a Detroit police officer in the 1990s and he was supposed to get married on Saturday.

"There was no lights or hazards on, the problem might have been electrical," said Lehman. "We don't know what the car problem was."

So what happens if you break down on the side of the road - perhaps your hazard lights aren't working because you have an electrical problem. Police say an reflective vest like and reflective triangles outside your car could save your life and help other drivers see you.

Police say the driver of the truck is cooperating with authorities and will likely not face charges.
