And the award for the most stressed city in the US goes to: Detroit

In a country where stress affects more than 100 million people, Detroit is the number one most stressed out city in America.

At least, according to a study by WalletHub. The report evaluated 182 cities across 37 key metrics, including average debt load to weekly work hours.

Detroit came in as the number one overall most stressed city in America, ranking first in health and safety stress, third in financial stress, fourth in family stress and 24th in work stress.

Health and safety stress included measurements like crime rate, share of adult binge drinkers, hate-crime incidents per capita,  mental health, share of adults diagnosed with depression, share of obese residents, share of adults with inadequate sleep and more.

Financial stress was measured in terms of metrics like personal-bankruptcy rate, housing affordability, median annual household income, foreclosure rate, poverty rate, median credit score and food insecurity.

The survey measured family stress based on separation and divorce rate, child care cost, median duration of current marriage, strength of social ties, share of single parent households and availability of childcare workers per total number of children.

And finally, work stressed was tallied by measurements like job security, income growth, average weekly work hours, unemployment rate, average commute time, job satisfaction ranking, underemployment rate and traffic congestion.

The Motor City also made a few other lists:

  • No. 1 in Lowest Median Credit Score
  • No. 1 in Highest Poverty Rate
  • No. 1 in Lowest Average Hours of Sleep per Night
  • No 2. in Highest Divorce Rate

Also on the list of most stressed cities was Grand Rapids at No. 153 overall, ranking 157 in work stress, 148 in financial stress, 147 in family stress and 91 in health and safety stress.
