Argument over compliment to woman sparked fight, shooting at movie theater - police

CLINTON TWP, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities have released a man they say shot another man inside an AMC movie theater in Clinton Township on Sunday.

Police were called to the AMC 21 on Gratiot around 6:30 Sunday night. Police said a 24-year-old Detroit man and 52-year-old Detroit man got into an argument in theater three. 

Police said the older man smiled and said hello to the other man's girlfriend, sparking the argument.

The argument turned into a fight and police said the older man, a registered CPL holder, pulled out his gun. The younger man was shot during the scuffle and hit in the upper chest. 

"I think it's horrible the way the world has become and is becoming," moviegoer Kevin Bruinsma said.

Right now, police say although they're getting two very different versions of what happened from those involved. They said they do have independent witnesses and on Monday, they released the alleged shooter pending possible charges.

Some moviegoers say they'd like a little more than just this sign on the front door that says no weapons or guns. 

"If they don't allow guns in their theater, I would love to know their procedures for our safety," Bruinsma said.

A spokesperson with AMC theaters tells FOX 2 that the safety of guests and associates is their top priority and they're working closely with police. 

The young man was critically injured but is stable in the hospital.
