Army of Angels: Patrols blanket Detroit for Angels Night campaign

Patrols have hit the streets to protect the D.

Thousands of volunteers, firefighters increased police presence are hitting the streets over the Angels Night period from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.

DTE Energy has 80 volunteers on the streets as well as the Detroit water department.

Community leadership group the Detroit 300 is also playing a role.

"If you're out here causing trouble, starting fires, we're going to be out here assisting Detroit police to bring you to justice," said Arthur Edge from Detroit 300.

At least three confirmed fires were reported in the early evening hours of Oct. 30.

One was reported at Manor Street near Keeler, while another happened at Ashton at W. Warren, reported Ron Savage.

A few small fires were reported in District 3 Friday night reported Randy Wimbley.

Early results were positive with 17 fires Thursday, the first day of the campaign. The average number of fires is about 30. 

Minors 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday and from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

Once known as Devils Night, the period around Halloween was known for rampant fires in the 1980s and 90s.
