Arson suspect sought after setting elderly woman's SUV ablaze

Detroit police asking for your help to catch a criminal who set fire to a car in a parking lot during broad daylight.

The fire and explosion seen on camera on Oakman at 3 p.m. on Jan. 25 was no accident, it was an act of arson and according to Detroit police it likely backfired.

The crime happened at about 3 p.m. on Jan. 25.

"He would have extensive injuries that can be life threatening," said Jermaine Owens, Detroit police arson unit. "We're asking the public to get him (medical) attention quick."

Police believe the man it has a suspect picture of, is the one in the video pouring what is believed to be gasoline onto this red Saturn.

"We are running those tests to see what type of accelerants were used," Owens said.

One second later on video, there is an explosion so powerful you can see debris land behind the victim's car.

Police say the target of this attack was a 70-year-old lady who is often at the shelter in the 800 block of Oakman.

"It was some type of ongoing confrontation," Owens said. "We want to talk to him about this situation."

As the fire starts, the suspect can be seen pulling away in a black sedan two spaces down.

Now police hope someone sees him again.

Investigators say checked area hospitals but believe he lives in the area. Contact Detroit police with any information at (313) 596-2200.
