At least 11 people shot, 5 dead in Detroit over the weekend

UPDATE Monday, May 9: Detroit Police Chief James Craig spoke about this weekend's violence at the opening of a new precinct. He says 21 people were shot this weekend, seven of which were killed. You can read more about that here, or continue reading the original story below.

The bloody weekend kicked off Friday just after noon.

Someone driving westbound on I-94 began firing multiple shots at a Pontiac G6 in the next lane. Approximately 12 shots were fired at the Pontiac. The victim crashed against the retaining wall at the ramp to the northbound Lodge.

The 28-year-old male driver called 911, despite suffering three gunshots to his head, arm and leg. He was rushed in critical condition to Henry Ford Hospital, along with his 25-year-old female passenger.

She was in good condition -- cut by shards of broken window glass but not shot. State police said this was not random but was instead an intended freeway hit. They believe the shooter who escaped will eventually be brought in.

Just hours later on Friday night, witnesses watched a man open fire on five adult men outside the Twin Hand car wash on Gratiot at Whithorn. One man was killed and the other four were rushed to St. John Hospital - -all in critical condition.

The shooter -- a black male in his early 20's about 6'4" and 180 pounds -- ran west from Gratiot and disappeared between a row of houses.

At almost the same time Friday night, east side just south of 8 Mile Road at Packard and Savage Street, a black Dodge Stratus pulled up on two men walking. Two suspects stepped out of the Dodge, and one with a rifle began shooting. A 21-year-old man was killed and the Dodge sped away westbound on Savage Street.

Also Friday night, on Detroit's east side -- on Meade just off Goddard -- a gunman was attempting to rob a man in front of a home. The victim's brother came out of the house to intervene. Both brothers were shot and one was killed. The other brother was left in critical condition.  Police did make an arrest in the shooting.

On Sunday morning, Mother's Day began with a 4 a.m. shooting on the 7000 block of Minock. A 45-year-old man was shot and killed, but an arrest not yet been made in this case.

Later Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Detroit police pull up on Plainview near west 7 Mile Road. They discover a 41-year-old man slumped over the wheel of a black Chevy Impala. He was dead - -his throat had been slit.
