Bernie Sanders campaigns for Hillary Clinton in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mihc. (WJBK) - Sen. Bernie Sanders was back in town, campaigning for his former rival Hillary Clinton.

He was urging his supporters to give the Democratic nominee their vote and he's tailoring his message to the middle class and union men and women.

"The state of Michigan is one of many in the Midwest that will likely be close in November for Clinton and Donald Trump, and that's why Sen. Bernie Sanders came to Ann Arbor.

Sanders was welcomed by an energized crowd at the University of Michigan, knowing this could be a tough state to win for either party in November, the senator says he is doing his part in hopes it will benefit Clinton.

"I think there are a number of states where the polling shows it's going to be very close," Sanders said.

Sanders tells FOX 2 he spoke with Clinton last week in New Hampshire and there is a plan for free college tuition which includes making the wealthiest people pay more taxes.

"What she said is,  I should tell the American people that in the first 100 days of her administration she will roll out a very specific plan to make public colleges and universities tuition free for all families earning less than $125,000 a year," Sanders said. "And have an aggressive approach to reducing student debt."

Sanders also spoke on improving the city of Detroit, focusing on the neighborhoods. He says the goal has to be creating more jobs and come up with a plan to help low income families.

Clinton will be in the Motor City on Monday to campaign once more.

"We also need to rebuild housing in this country in many communities, working people paying 40, 50, and 60 percent of their income on housing," Sanders said. "We need to build affordable housing."

Sanders will wrap his visit to Michigan in Grand Rapids. Clinton is expected to be in Detroit on Monday.
