Boy, 12, killed in house fire in Highland Park was home alone with sister: police

- Authorities are investigating what caused a deadly house fire early Monday morning in Highland Park. A 12-year-old boy died in the fire, and his 13-year-old sister has been hospitalized. Police say the two were home alone.

Highland Park Police Chief Chester Logan says firefighters were called to a home around 5:15 a.m. in the 240 block of Connecticut Street, which is near Oakland Avenue and Caniff.

When firefighters got there, they saw a girl that had burns. Chief Logan says the girl told firefighters her brother was still upstairs.

By the time firefighters were able to get to the boy, though, Chief Logan says he had already passed.

The siblings were home alone while their mother was at work, Chief Logan says. The 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital.

Authorities believe right now the fire started on the third floor of the home, but aren't sure what caused it yet.

Police have not yet given the names of the victims.
