Boy gets to be new 'Chief for a Day' after donation to K-9 unit

There is new Detroit police chief in town - at least for Wednesday.

Carter Widmer arrived in a helicopter for his day-long stint as Detroit's top cop. He earned the spot after making a generous donation to the department's K-9 Unit.

Showing up like a boss, the new mini chief of Detroit police 7-year-old Carter Widmer arrived to work in style.

Chosen to be "Chief for a Day," Wednesday the Macomb boy's parents say that Carter with his grandma, decided to donate $250 to the department.

Carter's dad is a Detroit police lieutenant for the special response team.

"They decided to donate to the K-9 unit in Detroit," said mother Kelly Widmer. "And this is how it all started. We were just amazed."

Future police officer and dog lover Carter was sworn in as the official top dog.

Carter got to meet the bomb detection dog Fletcher and the other men and women in blue.

Carter says he wants to work for the K-9 unit or the SWAT team.

"We're just proud of him for his generosity," said Lt. John Widmer. "Thinking to give to others."

This tiny police chief plans to send more gifts overseas to another officer and his dog, reminds everyone this holiday season: "Giving is better than getting."
