Breaking down September's rain numbers (or lack thereof)

On Facebook recently someone asked me, "Derek, this month has got to be one of the driest ever right? I feel like we've had NO rain. Also, I love your new haircut." Ok, fine, I made that last part up. But the first part was real.
And you know what? They were right.
We've only had 1.12" of rain so far this September, which is almost 50% less than normal. And September is generally the 4th wettest month of the calendar year! I dug into the numbers and found that so far this year, September has been the second driest month we've had - only Febuary was drier. That's craziness.
Then I got to thinking, how does this rank all time? Scouring through the archives proved that so far we rank as the 11th driest September ever! Surely some rain later this month will bump our numbers up, right?  Nope. The rest of the month looks dry, meaning we will likely stay right where we are at.
So there we are.
