WATERFORD, Mich. (WJBK) - An Oakland County lawn service ripped off by a bold thief, who stole equipment right in broad daylight.
But this crook isn't as slick as he might think - he was being watched by a surveillance camera.
The owners of a Waterford landscaping company say someone came there a few days ago, broke into one of their bins, and stole thousands of dollars' worth of equipment.
The owners believe the crooks shoved equipment through the side here and now they want the public to take a closer look at who is responsible.
Security cameras captured one of the men who the business owners believe are responsible for breaking into their bin Saturday evening along Edinburgh Road and taking everything they could get their hands on.
"However he was able to get in, he was not able to get equipment out," said owner Stephanie Elowsky. "From what he could tell, he was able to pry (the side wall) apart and remove our hand tools from under there."
Although the video isn't clear enough to get a license and good description, the owners believe their cameras captured a pick-up truck and getaway driver during the incident.
"We don't know who he is, that's why we are reaching out to the community," she said.
It took about an hour for the crooks to get in and out.
"Blower backpacks, commercial whips, edgers, things we use in our everyday lawn care maintenance company," Elowsky said.
Elowsky said she and her husband run a small family business, so the money adds up. Insurance will cover the burglary, but that's not the point.
"It's more about bringing justice to the situation," she said. "I have to go home and teach these things to my children. When I teach my children that we have a hard work ethic and we work for everything that we have. And someone just comes and takes your stuff, it is a hard pill to swallow."
FOX 2 put in a call to police about the investigation, but have not heard back. If you recognize the suspect, call Waterford police at (248) 674-0351.
