Caffeine and supplements for men, what works?

Caffeine before during and after a workout, is that a good idea? The answer is yes. Dr. Mark Moyad, author of "The Supplement Handbook" stopped by for a visit and said that not all supplements are equal.

"The Vitamin B supplements to enhance energy are a scam," Moyad said. "We don't have studies that show that B vitamins don't make athletes better."

Moyad said coffee is enjoying its best results in studies than ever.

"Before a workout, a couple ounces, during a workout, a couple ounces, and right after a workout a couple ounces," Moyad said. "It can reduce that fatigue, that muscle pain."

He said that Diet Mountain Dew is a good source of caffeine. "Not a bad option," he said. "But we're only talking about sipping a few ounces. We are not talking about drinking the whole thing.

Sports drinks don't work, Moyad said, but coconut water does.

"They advertise all these electrolytes," he said. "There are very little in there. When you look at the Potassium in coconut water it is more than a banana. A banana is 3 to 400 milligrams. A bottle of coconut water is over 500 milligrams.

"Throw out the Potassium supplements."

Moyad also talks about protein and some of the best sources for it.
