You've seen them on the streets  helping police protect Detroit during the Halloween season.

Now  the city is putting out the call for more "angels" to help out during the summer event season.

More than a million visitors attend events during summer in the D including River Days and the Ford Fireworks.

Detroit police is hoping to make the festivities safer thanks to volunteer Angels.

"We're asking Detroiters to come out, step up, volunteer and be part of our volunteer Angel program," said Cmdr. Todd Bettison, Detroit police.

Last year DPD, city council, district managers and church leaders recruited 165 volunteers last year.

They received free food, transportation and crime tip safety training.

"They were very instrumental," Bettison said. "They are our eyes and ears."
