Calling all angels: Volunteers needed for Angels Night

We're just days away from Halloween and that means "Angels Night" is just around the corner.

This year the effort is about much more than just stopping fires.

Standing outside Glory Supermarket in Highland Park Thursday, folks with the Marcus Garvey movement recruit volunteers for Angels Night preparing to patrol the streets this weekend through Halloween.

"It's not just about Angels Night," said Malik Shabazz, Detroit Marcus Garvey Movement president. "It's about every night. It's not just about the Arson -- it's about the rape the robbery the murder the gangbanging and the dope slinging."

Detroit police, firefighters, first responders, city officials and neighbors across metro Detroit get ready to hit the streets to prevent crime and keep trick-or-treaters safe.

"Flashlights, in numbers," Shabazz said. "Fifty cars, 100 cars. Crime goes down."

And these bright T-shirts of Angels Night volunteers proving there's power in numbers.

"You can put on your porch light," said Raymond Solomon, Angels Night coordinator. "Or be an in-house volunteer - help serve food and pass out supplies. There's room for everybody."

City officials say in 2014 there were nearly 100 fires over those three days. In 2015, that number was cut in half. This year the city also plans to adopt police precincts and fire houses for children to go trick-or-treating.

"We're committed, the mayor is committed," Solomon said. "In fact DDOT is coming to the 10th precinct to decorate an entire bus. So we're getting back to the festive part for kids, the young people."

Thanking the thousands of volunteers who donated their time last year, these neighbors are continuing to fight for their city and for the children who deserve to have a happy Halloween.

There are many easy things you can do to help, turning on porch light, donating candy or adopting a vacant home.
