Campaign sign for gay mayoral candidate vandalized

- An openly gay candidate for mayor in Southfield finds his campaign signs defaced. Is it hate speech or simply dirty politics?

A "Ken Siver for Mayor" campaign sign at the corner of 10 Mile and Rutland in Southfield was defaced. A second sign saying "Hate is not a Southfield community value" popped up next to the vandalized sign.

"I don't know why anyone would do anything like that," said Wayne Knox, a neighbor and supporter of Siver.

On Wednesday police received reports that the sign for Siver, who is gay, was vandalized with anti-gay slurs

"What does that have to do with anything," Knox said. "His sexual orientation? I wish everyone were as nice as Ken."

The Siver campaign also says signs were damaged at 10 Mile and Telegraph and 10  Mile east of Berg Road.

Siver is up against city council president Sylvia Jordan to be Southfield's next mayor.

The vandalism comes after racist flyers related to the upcoming mayoral election were circulated earlier this year in Southfield.

Siver, who is a former city councilman, would not appear on camera but told Fox 2 in a statement:

"When someone is negative my approach is to take the “high road.” It is indeed unfortunate that some individuals have chosen to distribute race-baiting flyers and deface/destroy my campaign signs.

"I have been elected to public office four times.  I always run a clean campaign and never attack my opponents.  I stick to the issues, my vision for the city and my track record in this community."

A center in Ferndale Affirmations, which supports the LGBT community says this vandalism can't be tolerated.

"I feel we've been making great strides in the state of Michigan, the metro Detroit community and nationally," said  Jill Proctor of Affirmations. "But I feel this is a step in the wrong direction."

Police say at this time they don't have any leads and want anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

"They should really be ashamed of themselves," Knox said. "And I don't think it will help them whatsoever."
