2 men dead, driver wanted after hit-and-run in Canton

CANTON, Mich. (WJBK) - Police are investigating after two men were killed in a hit-and-run crash in Canton.

Canton Police say the two men crossing were hit by three vehicles at the intersection of Michigan and Lotz. Right now, police are looking for one driver who didn't stay to help.

The two men were crossing the busy road, where the speed limit is 55 miles an hour, when they were struck by several vehicles around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The 55-year-old victim who died was struck by two vehicles, and the other 45-year-old victim was hit by a third vehicle. The 45-year-old was in critical condition, but has since died.

Police say everyone stayed at the scene, except for the first driver who hit that 55-year-old man.

Witnesses described the driver police are looking for as a clean-cut man with dark hair, and that he was last seen wearing a black suit and a red tie.

Lt. Pat Sullivan with the Canton Police told FOX 2 the driver was "a Middle Eastern male, approximately 36 to 40 as the witnesses described him." He continued saying, "(The man) kind of walked back towards the scene, got in the vehicle and left. A 2013 to 2016 Dodge Caravan, either dark blue or black."

Police say the Caravan is also likely to have damage on the front end. Investigators spent the evening at the intersection looking for every piece of evidence. This may have been an accident, but police need that remaining driver to come forward.

"You got to watch out; you can't take anything for granted," said Lt. Sullivan. "Really be vigilant when you're out walking and when you're driving too. You never know."

Jawad Thir works in the area, and spoke to us. "Whatever happened, you have to stop. You have to look at the guy, what happened, and you got to call 911."

Some who work in the area say they see a lot of foot traffic crossing this busy road every day, and even at night.

"I always tell them not to go there," asid Thir. "Most of the time, even at night, even the cars, it's difficult to see, and I tell them not to go there."

The victims names have not yet been given.
