A stunning revelation in the murder of a Wayne State University police sergeant.

Prosecutors officially dropped the charges Wednesday against the man once accused of shooting and killing Collin Rose. Former suspect DeAngelo Davis' name has been cleared after a review of new evidence.

Now there is a $15,000 reward to help find the real killer.

With the murder charges against DeAngelo Davis dropped, the person responsible is still on the streets and you have to wonder if police are back at square one in their investigation.

FOX 2 spoke to the mother of DeAngelo Davis. She sends her condolences to the family of Colin Rose, but says her son is owed an apology.

"He's owed a public apology the way they publicly humiliated him, me also, and my family," said his mother Valerie Davis. "They public did that, and he deserves better as a human being."

Neighbors of Davis say that a leg injury prevents DeAndre Davis from riding a bicycle, which was another reason they believed he was innocent.

Valerie Davis has stood by her son, 29 year old DeAngelo Davis. He had been arrested and arraigned on charges in the shooting death of Rose.

On Nov. 22 the tragedy happened in the Woodbridge community where the former suspect's mother lives. Rose, found shot in the head, died one day later in the hospital.

During a short, three minute press conference on Wednesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy announced the charges against Davis in this case have been dropped.

The assembled media asked what evidence emerged to clear Davis, but those at the press conference stayed mum.

"That's something, this is for the prosecutor," said Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt. "I think that's something you need to ask the prosecutor's office what was presented to them and what they want to see."

"None of us including you, want to jeopardize the investigation," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "So we will be taking no questions."

A source told FOX 2 that investigators spotted DeAngelo Davis on camera at a different location during the time of the shooting. We spoke to employees at several businesses in the neighborhood, and they also tell me police came looking at their surveillance video.

One of those businesses, which asked not to be identified, believes investigators saw Davis walking along the sidewalk on their cameras, which is the video that is apparently now in police custody.

"Because we made an arrest, the investigation did not stop, it continues to this day," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "We are optimistic."

Davis has had run-ins with the law before, including with Wayne State University Police, but his mother refused to believe he would kill anyone.

"I know he didn't do it," Valerie Davis said. "His past history shouldn't be up on him. They should do something about this especially with them not letting me see him."

There is also the murder weapon which has not been found. This is pushing the ATF and the Detroit Dog Rescue to offer a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Rose was a canine officer at WSU and his fiancé works with the DDR.

"The money is out there, we want to find this gun, we know that the gun is out there," the DDR’s Kristina Rinaldi said. "Wherever it may be. It's important to find it to keep this case moving forward."

"I'm sad for the Colin family losing their son," Valerie Davis said. "I'm also sad I don't have any information. I went to go visit him yesterday. They wouldn't let me visit him. They told me I wasn't on the list."

Davis remains in custody here at the Wayne County Jail on outstanding warrants. His mother says she has been getting the run around, and has not been able to visit, saying she's only had two phone conversations with him, each time he claimed his innocence. No word at this time on when he will be released.
